The goal is to lower cost while maintaining or improving performance.

  • Improved Membranes: Innovations in membrane technology aim to reduce methanol crossover while maintaining high proton conductivity. This includes developing composite membranes and novel polymer architectures.

  • System Design and Integration: Advancements in stack design, such as improved channel design, advanced bipolar plate materials, and better water and thermal management, are also contributing to efficiency gains . Passive DMFCs, in particular, are seeing growth as they eliminate pumps and blowers, reducing both cost and failure points.
