According to recent industry analysis from Market Research Future, the global in-wheel motors market was valued at $5.0 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $8.8 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 5.2% during the forecast period. At the heart of this emerging technology are in wheel motors hub motors, also known as hub motors, which represent a fundamental shift in electric vehicle propulsion by integrating the electric motor directly into the wheel assembly. This innovative design eliminates the need for traditional drivetrain components like transmissions, differentials, and drive shafts, offering significant advantages in efficiency, packaging, and vehicle design flexibility.

Hub motors function by incorporating the electric motor into the wheel hub, with the stator fixed to the suspension and the rotor directly connected to the wheel. This direct-drive configuration allows for more precise power delivery to each wheel, enabling advanced torque vectoring capabilities that enhance vehicle handling and stability. The technology has a long history, with Ferdinand Porsche pioneering electric wheel hub motors in the Lohner-Porsche vehicles of the late 19th century, though widespread commercial adoption in modern passenger cars has remained elusive due to several technical challenges.

The advantages of hub motors are compelling for EV manufacturers and consumers alike. By placing the motor in the wheel, valuable interior space is freed up, allowing for larger battery packs, more passenger room, or innovative vehicle designs. The elimination of complex mechanical components reduces drivetrain losses, improving overall efficiency and potentially extending vehicle range. Hub motors also simplify vehicle platforms, making it easier to offer front-, rear-, or all-wheel-drive configurations on the same architecture. This simplification can lower manufacturing costs and enhance modularity for automakers.

Recent advancements are bringing hub motor technology closer to mass production. YASA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, has developed a prototype in-wheel motor based on its record-breaking axial-flux motor that can deliver over 1,000 horsepower per wheel while remaining "mass-neutral" to avoid adding unsprung weight. Similarly, Protean Electric has unveiled a 220 kW production-ready wheel hub motor, with plans for a European electric sports car to feature the technology from 2026. These developments signal that in wheel motors hub motors may finally be on the cusp of mainstream automotive adoption, particularly in performance and niche vehicle segments.
