Non-Condensing (Back-Pressure) Turbines: Balancing Power and Heat

A non-condensing, or back-pressure, turbine exhausts steam at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure. This exhaust steam is then used for industrial process heating, district heating, or other thermal applications. The primary purpose of a non-condensing turbine is to provide a controlled pressure drop to drive the turbine, while simultaneously producing the required steam pressure for a downstream process. This makes them ideal for combined heat and power (CHP) applications.

The Noncondensing segment, while smaller, is the fastest-growing segment, driven by the increasing demand for efficient CHP systems and its suitability for process industries. These turbines offer advantages in flexibility, lower capital costs, and simplified operation. The selection between a condensing and a non-condensing turbine is a critical decision. If the primary goal is to maximize electrical output, a condensing turbine is the right choice. If the facility has a significant and consistent demand for process heat, a non-condensing turbine is the more efficient and economical option.
